Personal Assistant/Carer (Sheffield)

Job Title: Personal Assistant/Carer

Location: Sheffield

Salary:

  • £15.35 – £18.30 per hour and up to £24.40 per hour for cover shifts
  • £250.08 per day for travel

My name is Rosie, and I am looking for a personal assistant to support me in my life and with my personal care needs. I am 34 and sustained a spinal cord injury in 2009, which made me quadriplegic. Before my injury, I was at the University of York studying History and living with my parents and younger brother during the holidays. Following my injury, I spent 9 months in hospital in the spinal injuries unit. Since my injury, I have always tried to make the best of every situation, even the difficult ones, and continue my interests and work as well as working on new projects. I returned to university to complete my degree, although adapting to life as well as going back to studying was difficult alongside needing 24-hour care.

I love music, films, books and travelling. I enjoy going to gigs as well as being sociable and spending time with my family. My boyfriend lives 4 hours away from me and I spend a significant amount of time staying with him. I moved into a new house in Sheffield in the summer of 2023 and I own a villa in Spain, which I renovated and adapted for wheelchair users. I visit the villa for 4-8 weeks per year and I also rent out the villa as a business. I am currently in Thailand for one month with my boyfriend and have three personal assistants working with me.

I employ five full-time personal assistants and three to five people part-time. Most of my team have been working with me long-term, for between three and twelve years. They are all very hard working and dedicated, and all of whom I have a close relationship with and care about very much.

As part of the team, you would receive one month of training with me by one of the experienced members of my team. This may include a short trip with me to my boyfriend’s house, including staying over for approximately two nights. On completion of training, you would sometimes be working alongside another member of staff, but you would also work independently for a large portion of the time. Generally, the staff work shifts; 8am or 9am to 8pm and then a waking night 8pm to 8am or 9am. I have double up care most mornings between 9am and 1pm. Currently, I am looking for someone to work during the day rather than at night, but there would be potential for working nights after more experience is gained.

As a person with a positive outlook on life, I am looking for a positive, motivated, organised and calm person who would like to work with me both at home and whilst travelling. I need support with all of my daily life and there are a few things to mention that will be part of your job role in addition to my personal care;

  • Travelling with me in the UK and abroad when I am on my own, with my boyfriend, who also has a spinal cord injury and his own care team, or with my family and friends. My boyfriend would also need some minimal assistance when we are together.
  • Driving me in my own adapted vehicle, which is a large people carrier. It is necessary to be a competent and smooth driver who is willing to drive in Europe. I travel as a passenger in my wheelchair but sometimes a transfer is needed to get me into other vehicles.
  • I have a six-month-old cat and a Golden-doodle who loves playing and having regular walks. I would need your support with caring for my pets, including feeding them, playing with them and walking the dog.
  • I have physiotherapy twice a week and like to live a healthy life and look after my body. You would be assisting during my physiotherapy and hydrotherapy sessions.
  • Support would be needed looking after my new house as well as meal preparations.
  • It is really important to me to look after my appearance and I would love to work with someone who enjoys doing hair and makeup.

Qualifications:

NVQ level 2 or equivalent is an advantage, though not essential. Training will be provided to applicants with an aptitude for care. Further development is offered.

PLEASE NOTE THAT WE CAN ONLY ACCEPT APPLICATIONS FROM APPLICANTS THAT ARE ELIGIBLE TO WORK IN THE UK AND WE CANNOT OFFER SPONSORSHIP.

Closing Date: 14 February 2024
