10 October is World Mental Health Day, a global initiative dedicated to raising awareness of mental health issues and mobilising support for mental wellbeing. This year’s theme, “Mental Health at Work”, highlights the vital connection between our working environments and our mental health.
At AKA Case Management, we believe that mental health is everyone’s business. We are proud to support World Mental Health Day and to share the ways we foster a mentally healthy workplace, not just on 10 October, but every day.
Why Mental Health at Work Matters
With 60% of the global population in employment, the workplace plays a crucial role in shaping mental health outcomes. The World Health Organisation (WHO) is calling for urgent action to ensure that work environments protect and support mental well-being, rather than contribute to stress, stigma, or poor health.
How AKA Supports Mental Health at Work
We have taken meaningful steps to create a workplace culture that prioritises wellbeing. Here are some of the things that we do at AKA and hope they provide inspiration for individuals and businesses on some simple ways they can support mental health in the workplace:
An extra day off each week gives our team time to rest, recharge, and manage life’s demands, whether that’s relaxing, having fun, catching up with family or tackling the to-do list.
We encourage taking 15 minutes each day to slow down and be present. These small moments of mindfulness help reduce stress and improve focus. We support our team by running online breathwork sessions to help them build this habit.
Life doesn’t always fit into a 9–5. Our flexible working policy allows staff to adjust their schedules and work from wherever suits them best.
We lead with empathy, assuming everyone is doing their best. This approach builds trust and creates a supportive, respectful environment.
We put staff and clients at the heart of our decisions. Events like our Remembrance Day with former client Mark show how we value lived experience and personal stories.
Every week, we take time to connect, whether it’s over a cuppa, a quiz, or a casual chat. These moments help build community and reduce isolation.
From festive meals to hikes in the Peaks and professional conferences like BABICM, we make time to meet face-to-face and strengthen relationships. This is particularly important as our team work remotely, coming together every so often makes a real difference to team spirit.
We’ve enabled more frequent in-person meetings, both regionally and as a whole, to share knowledge, skills, and best practices.
We equip our team with tools to manage their work efficiently. A review in late September/early October will refresh everyone on how to make the most of these resources.
At AKA Case Management, we’re committed to creating a workplace where people feel supported, heard, and empowered. By investing in mental health at work, we are not just helping our team thrive, we’re contributing to a healthier, more compassionate future.
We urge others to do the same: for themselves, their teams, and the wider community by looking at simple and easy ways to support mental health.
